Thoreau frequently enjoys gifts and letters left on his headstone at Sleepy Hollow. Usually, when one leaves paper on the ground it’s considered littering, but up at Author’s Ridge, it’s an almost sacred tradition.

Moving deeper into the elegantly laid-out memorial grounds, we’ll discover more and more people of interest and explore their intriguing ties to one another. In particular, Frank Sanborn, whose story is so riddled with famous names, you’ll hardly believe it’s true! And no visit to Sleepy Hollow would be complete without paying homage to Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Bring your camera, your walking shoes and your curiosity and prepare to be delighted by what you’ll see and hear along the way!

Join us for a 90-minute guided walking tour through Concord’s beautiful and fascinating resting place, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

We’ll begin our tour in the oldest section of New Hill Burial Ground and with the Thoreau family only to discover, Henry has been moved!

(But don’t worry, we know where they put him.)

We’ll learn about the first licensed woman driver in the United States, and her connection to another Concordian, Daniel Chester French, creator of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

While we can’t claim to have seen that headless fella in our Sleepy Hollow, this cemetery is home to some of the most legendary names in early American Literature and boasts a staggering amount of history.

a little irreverent. a lot of fun.

** Fine-print disclaimer stuff** Due to the unpredictable nature of our New England weather, it might not always be feasible to go for a walk. At least, not a pleasant one. We’ll do our best to work around these situations, and unless it’s really pouring rain, or snowing sideways, we’ll try and give it a go. Therefore, appropriate clothes/umbrellas, etc. are strongly recommended!
