Some historical interpreters we’re crazy about!
This is where you get to tell us exactly what you’d like to do in Concord and we’ll create the perfect itinerary for you and your group.
Some examples of a customized experience might include:
- Talented and expert historic interpreters to portray your favorite authors during a picnic, formal dinner or educational lecture.
- A private visit to the Concord Free Public Library or the Thoreau Institute where you can delight (and geek-out) in original documents and letters from Thoreau, Emerson or Alcott.
-An afternoon dedicated entirely to historic taverns, ending at the Colonial Inn and a fantastic show by Toddy, Tripp and their Revolutionary Spirits!
-And since we’re here year round, how about letting Gatepost plan a snowy morning adventure out at Walden Pond, an exclusive tour of an author’s home in the afternoon and then a cozy evening at one of Concord’s historic inns, complete with warm drinks and roaring fire. A perfect New England winter day!

A little irreverent. A lot of fun.
Though endlessly entertaining, we’d like you to know that this particular vision is not the only manifestation of an historical interpreter, and you’re more likely to find them, as a whole, a surprisingly subtle lot. The reason for this stems from the fact that the majority of talented interpreters are actually scholars first, and actors as a bonus.
Apparently, when you wish to convincingly portray and answer questions as an historic character, it rather helps to have read up on them. A lot. So much in fact that a few PhD’s worth of fascinating, expert knowledge is usually to be found crammed inside the heads of these strangely dressed beings, even if an official diploma isn’t hanging on the wall to match.
Our experience has been one of wonder and delight when lucky enough to attend a reading, lecture or performance by the people we’ve highlighted on this page. If you and your group are looking to encounter authentic, living history, or make an unforgettable impact on students, fellow teachers or coworkers, then consider utilizing the talents of an historic interpreter as part of your tour of Concord.
Through our partnerships with these individuals, Gatepost is able to arrange an inspiring recital by Hawthorne; an educational Q&A session with Thoreau; a dramatic, interactive portrayal of Louisa; or an outrageous display of spirits, song and swordsmanship by our 18th-century friends Toddy and Tripp - just to give you a few ideas!
Of course, there are plenty of muddy fields in Concord too...
Got something else in mind? All you need to do is ask - we’ll make it happen!
Historical interpreter:
you’re a what?
For most people, the term “historical interpreter” will conjure images of slightly wacky, middle-aged southern men who play dress up in muddy fields while they cheerfully attempt to mow down their equally enthusiastic, and similarly be-costumed friends. Sort of like Halloween for grownups. Only scarier, and with less candy.
Interpreter down!
